Essay Topics

Common App Essay

I wrote about how I thought of an interesting math problem, tried to solve it, failed, but was still proud of myself for having discovered something new in the process without help from anything else. Transitioned into my love for problem-solving in math, how it's always been fundamental to who I am, and how I've recently developed a passion for teaching. It's written in a mix of formal and casual, pretty close to how I talk in everyday life. Well-written, regardless.

California Institute of Technology — Supplemental

I didn't put much thought into these. I wrote about my personal journey of being challenged by AcaDec, my lifelong love for astronomy, and my teamwork experiences in Boy Scouts. They're well-written, but they're pretty generic in hindsight.

hmc — Supplemental

I put a lot more effort into these. For the “why do you want to study here” question, I put down all the main points I feel like they'd look for based on their website and related them back to the traits I like to see in schools. I also mentioned my interest in politics and how I'd like to take a class in the theory behind it all.

Letters of Recommendation
  • Sophomore/junior year English teacher

Saw me both in-person and online. I excelled and participated somewhat in both classes. Probably a 9/10

  • Junior year physics teacher

Only saw me online. I didn't participate much but excelled in the class, and she knows I'm self-studying E&M and taking DE math classes. Probably an 8/10 or 9/10

  • Academic Decathlon coach

I'm the top-scoring team member and have done a lot for the rest of the team. Our relationship is really friendly. Probably a 9/10 or 10/10

  • Employer

I'm the youngest person she's ever hired (15 years old) and she seems to like me a lot. Probably an 8/10
