Essay Topics
My personal statement was about my first activity and how going on the trip gave me a greater cultural understanding of the United States and the countries it has interacted with, especially since I applied as an IR major.
- Bowdoin College
- Performance/Outcome: 6/10. It was fine, just wasn't as much chat as it was breakneck question-answer. Not bad, just not particularly noteworthy.
- Reed College
- Performance/Outcome: 8/10. I mentioned Phoebe Bridgers in reference to an art piece I was working on and my interviewer turned out to be a fan, so we bonded over that immediately. She was really sweet.
- Middlebury College
- Performance/Outcome: 6/10. My interviewer was older and felt removed enough from the whole college process that we didn't have a ton to talk about. It was an even half-hour long.
- Dartmouth College
- Performance/Outcome: 8/10. This was my shortest-lasting interview overall, which scared me, but we had the most in common in terms of our backgrounds. He seemed really agreeable with every answer I gave.
- Bates College
- Performance/Outcome: 8.5/10. My interviewer asked questions I was absolutely not prepared for, but he was very understanding and seemed genuinely very interested in what I had to say.
AP World and Euro Teacher
7.5/10. We've known one another quite a while since he was my teacher freshman year, and I was a total tryhard in both classes. We talk casually about music pretty often, and I would come in early a lot so we have a pretty casual relationship. I loved Euro a ton and participated quite a lot, but I still caution from giving this a 100% because he's not really the easiest to be besties with. Still super glad I asked him though!
AP Lit and Lang Teacher
8.5/10. I haven't done perfectly in this class by a longshot, but most of the schools I applied to required at least 2 core teachers. Nevertheless, even if the class was harder than Euro, I feel close to her on a personal level. She said to my face that I'm one of her favorite students which I found very flattering.
Critical Thinking Teacher
11/10. This dude. Icon. He is the moment. Even if I could only use this rec for the few schools that allowed for a bonus, I think it helped 100%. Besides the independent study, I took the actual class in my junior year and had a blast. And I won like 3 or 4 school awards from that class alone! Super rad.
Peer rec for Dartmouth
9/10. I asked my best friend in the entire world to write this. He's known me since 4th grade, we've had classes and activities together for the past 8 years, and is overall just a genuinely great person. I know he isn't the type to write anything negative.
